Suzycat, you don't want to KNOW.
I had a look at TWoP and I think I can reasonably and finally state that SV is dead to me now. It's all AU from here on in.
Honestly. If they wanted a sekrit brother returning, why not - as someone mentioned on TWoP - Lucas, FFS?
The writing team probably *mixed them up*. Since this Grant Gabriel person is way too old to be Julian, and also way too NOT SMOTHERED TO DEATH BY HIS MOTHER causing Lionel to hate Lex because he thought Lex did the smothering. WHAT, oh WHAT??? I suppose we're meant to believe that Lex is just insane, which of course naturally makes him eviller.
I fear for the sanity of some flisties now.
There is a Lex-centric episode coming up which will probably try and "explain" this. Lex and Lillian thought the baby was dead; Lionel faked the death and snuck the baby away.
Of course, that fails to explain why Grant is ten years too old or why Lex thinks Lionel would kill him now. MR gabbled this exposition out like he was hating every word of it, which I can well understand. My poor baby.
If they couldn't use Lucas, why not give Lex another secret half-brother? Lionel catted around a lot in his time. That would have been a convincing developement.
It boggles the mind that they would trash their best episodes like this. But I guess after S6, I shouldn't be surprised by anything :(
Well, that makes sense. Lillian smothered the baby. Lex went and looked at the baby and thought "oh noes dead." Lionel looked at Lex looking at the seemingly dead baby, put two and two together, smacked Lex in the face and presumably sent him to bed without any supper. Then, he did CPR and revived the baby and put it out for adoption! But not through his own adoption agency, since only one baby was ever adopted through it, and that was Clark. Why no. He used some other adoption agency. The experience of being smothered as an infant and his hard, unpampered life in an orphanage aged young Julian by ten years; at the age of 10 he was already a brilliant journalist (TM) and looked rilly old. Now, at about 17, he could pass for 30! Either that or Lionel injected him with some kind of wicked ageing serum. Perhaps he's actually Lana's nonbaby as well?
Perfect sense! I look forward to seeing this presented in montage form a few episodes from now.
Some TWoP'Pers are theorizing that Grant is actually a Julian clone that Lex has made....just because. This would also be profoundly stupid but at least it doesn't trash poor Lex's history quite as badly.
"It's a clone" seems to be the answer to every continuity/OOC issue this show has ever had, though few of these clones have come to canon fruition. I fear Vengeance!Lana is going to turn out to be a clone, with Unsullied!Pure!Lana holed up in a nunnery somewhere. Then again, why bother? Clark forgives her everything. She could bear their child, molest it and eat it alive and he'd be all "I still love Lana!!!" "But Clark, I did it for US!" "Oh, well, that's OK then." With Chloe and Lois singing a chorus of "She Will Be Loved" in the background.
They did a 180 on Vengeance!Lana this week: she's suddenly having regrets to which Clark says: "Lana, we all make mistakes." But, naturally.
She could still be a clone. There was a spoiler indicating the clone stuff isn;t over yet. If Grant's a clone....I guess he doesn't know it yet? He thinks he's 25 but he's actually a few months old? Though why Lex would make a Julian-clone ten years too old is beyond me.
The other WTF - Lex says Lionel took Julian away because Lilian was "terminally ill." But Lilian got sick two years after Julian supposedly died (which was confirmed as recently as S6.)
That is so messed up. How much crack were they smoking when they came up with the Julian twist?
And I'm just spitting nails over the whole Jor-El punishing Clark thing.
Do you think AlMiles had really bad relationships with their fathers?
The thing is, they probably thought they were being clever. "Julian! Continuity!" But in typical slapdash SV manner, it didn't occur to them that it would wreck Lex's entire back story & destroy the character MR crafted so well.
Bad relationships with their fathers, terrible rejection at the hands of a slim and possibly Asian brunette, and a strong dislike of Superman, I reckon.
Yep, I think you've hit the nail on the head.
Those writers better stop being on strike quick-like. They're easy targets for enraged fans out on the line, they'd be safer back in their offices.
The sad thing is - the writers probably thought they were doing something cool, giving Lex a big, dramatic plot-line. If they'd taken the time to actually watch the Julian episodes, surely they would have thought better of this and brought back Lucas, or another of Lionel's secret sons, instead.
this is a horrible development. they expect us not to notice the age disparity, etc.? my regard for the shows' makers couldn't get much lower.
See, even if Grant is actually a Julian clone as some of have been theorizing....he's still TEN YEARS too old.
SO sad :(
Okaaaaaays now. I am 2 eps behind on SV and so not tempted to catch up now. My quality of life goes up when I'm not repeatedly banging my head against the wall contemplating how stupid this show can be...no matter how gorgeous MR or TW may be. Dangit, SV writers, why must you spoil the absolute pretty?! *pouts*
Rosenbaum seemed pissed off by his lines in this ep - and no wonder. It totally trashes his brilliant work in the Julian episodes.
I avoid spoilers like the plague but something made me click this cut and WHAAAAAT THE HEEEEEELL?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(
Apart from the Julian retcon, this just ain't a fun episode. Oy.
The pathos in all this, is that Al & Miles probably meant well: Let's give Lex a substantive plot that doesn't involve Lana. The fans will love it!
I've come around to thinking that Grant is either a Julian clone or a clone that's been programmed to think he's Julian. But it's still a dumb, unnecessarily convoluted plot-line. Why waste Lex's time with this when he's got Brainiac on the loose and a Clark to pursue?
