Michael's new show [Mar. 26th, 2010|10:01 pm]

Yay, Smallville boys! First Tom gets his "Hellcats" green-lit & is currently recruiting his cast and now Michael's show "Zeroes" has a script commitment from SyFy. Link

While I'm always a cheerleader for Michael's projects, I'm especially excited for "Zeroes."

Premise
This is a good premise, so good that I'd watch this show even if Michael wasn't involved. Michael characterizes it as "Galaxy Quest" meets "Eastbound and Down." It's the "Galaxy Quest" part that makes it WIN - it's such a rich vein to mine: conventions, fans, flashbacks to Michael's character's old TV show.

Potential
Just imagine the potential guest stars that could appear in this show! A chance for genre and sci-fi actors to send themselves up: I want to see Stargate, Supernatual and Battlestar Galactica people engage in a little self-parody. I want to see Michael's convention buddy Brad Dourif. I want a John Glover cameo. And most of all I want to see Tom show off his comic chops - imagine Tom playing "himself"? He could play Bizarro!Tom: obsessed with publicity and shoving himself in front of the cameras. Gold!

It's Michael's!
This isn't Michael's first attempt at a pilot: Welcome to Paradise, Bullinsky, Green River Road....all cool ideas, all back on the shelf. I love that he didn't get discouraged, that he kept pitching ideas until one hit. It's exciting that he will be involved behind the scenes, as well as onscreen and this hopefully will open up even more opportunities for him.

Smallville
Someone tweeted to Michael today "I hope you don't use the show to burn bridges..". Meaning: please don't use your new show to bash your old show. It's a thoughtful comment; I expect some gentle satire at the expense of SV but that most of the humour will be self-deprecating, because that's how Michael rolls. And if anything, Michael landing this show actually increases the chance of him popping up on SV again. Why? Because he will know what his filming schedule will be and if he can fit in a trip to Vancouver; because he'll get to return on his own terms (no shaving!); because the theme of "Zeroes" shows the huge impact SV has had on his life and because now, he has his own show to promote. (Symbiosis, baby!)

The one unknown quantity
Not sure yet what to think about Jonathan Silverman. I haven't seen much of his work. What do people think? Will he be a worthy co-star? Will he & Michael have chemistry?

I'm in agreement with you all the way!

I think that Michael and Jonathan Silverman can make it work, and I hope they have chemistry!

And now, to the obligatory squee (I'm too tired for more, lol):

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Everything you said!! I'm so excited about this, it sounds like such a fun and clever show! Michael would never ridicule Smallville or be mean-spirited about his experience there, but I fully expect him to poke some gentle fun and crack inside jokes only his former co-stars will fully understand. And, as you say, make plenty of jokes at his own expense.

OMG, your Bizarro!Tom idea is genius!! How funny would that be for him to play, and for us to see? I, too, would love to see all kinds of genre actors show up for cameos as themselves. And I'm already dreaming about the gag reel on the eventual DVD set of S1. Not to get ahead of myself or anything... :D

I like Jonathan Silverman. I used to watch The Single Guy, a sitcom he did about 15 years ago (Ming-Na was hilarious in it). It was full of the same self-deprecating humor I expect to see in this show, and he pulled it off quite nicely. His character was funny when he messed up, but charmingly so. He never came off as a loser or a jerk.

I love that pic! I like how the question mark seems to float above his head, as if he's contemplating his future and wondering what lies in store, as he gazes up at the studio around him, like an actor looking up at the lights of Broadway for the very first time. Behold the future star, about to take the world by storm! :) Plus, sexy scruff! Rowr.

Oh, that's nice to hear! Sounds like a nice mesh with Michael's style.

Heh, that's exactly it a "Babe on Broadway"! Hope we get more pics from him soon.

Does JF have a twitter or message board? Your SG pals could lobby for a cameo for him!

No, Joe doesn't have anything like that. In fact awhile ago a picture surfaced of him holding a sign that said, "I'm not on Twitter," with him in his Sheppard gear wearing a pissed look on his face---because there are a bunch of people on there pretending to be him.

However, this did give me the idea to Tweet Jace Hall, the guy that got the "Joe as Rockford," campaign going. That might work!

It's such a great template for a TV comedy, I'm amazed no one's done it yet! Bravo, Michael!

I hope he doesn't parody middle age female fans who attend conventions to get autographs and photos of themselves with their fandom fantasies
Hee, he doesn't want us to stop loving him! I think he'll be mostly kind to the fans. There may be a little parody of the fans who cannot accept him as any other character, ever and "SHAVE THAT HEAD RIGHT NOW, MISTER!

That's what I hope too. It's wrong of me but I hope MR creates a character for himself that is not a tool about fans - but otoh that's pretty par for the course in sucn a show, that one of them at least would be all cynical about their con-focused life and hate every second of it, and MR is good at that kind of role. Of course they could undercut such a role by having interesting wellrounded and nice fan characters.

OOOH! There should be slash references my GOD.

I am so hoping this show works out. It does sound like such a great idea. I think the only thing I've seen Jonathan Silverman in was "Weekend at Bernie's", which was a strange but goofy movie. They could work well together.

It'd be so awesome if they could get all kinds of stars doing cameos! Wonder if Michael would try to get Carrie Fisher on an ep. lol

Wouldn't that be fantastic? She's his neighbour - she can't say "no!"

I was (shallowly) wishing JS was a little hotter but that may be beside the point for his character. He's not actually playing Tom, after all.

My concern is how the show will treat the fans. Remember - he's the one who practically forced [info]richess to squeeze his tush.

He seemed very cool. I hope it wasn't just research.

He's been attending conventions since long before he became an actor. He's talked about taking the bus to New Jersey to go to horror conventions and meet his heroes. I think he understands fans because he is a fan, still. He brings his light sabre to meet George Lucas, he framed a letter from Wes Craven and at SFX, he ran over like an excited kid to meet Alex Ross.

So he knows what it's like on both sides of the table, which is not the case for many convention celebs. And Michael's humour, while self-deprecating, isn't ironic. He doesn't attend Chicago or Christopher Cross concerts with an ironic outsider perspective; he goes because he loves the music. So on "Zeroes", I'd expect most of the mocking, will be squarely aimed at his own character. (With the network and perhaps Al/Miles surrogates taking an occasional hit.)

Eeee! Exciting news and it sounds like an awesome concept. I loved how they described it as non-tourage (LOL. Or something like that, I just remember cracking up). Can't wait for it :).

And, OMG, bizzaro!Tom? LOL. Yes

and i'm so happy for him. maybe i'm not the best fan in the world but i'm glad he finally found something that makes HIM happy. ppl should just STFU and let him do his own thing. he deserves it.

well, i don't know. i wouldn't mind for sure. but i don't think he's a good friend of Jared. it would be more possible to see Jensen there, one day. ;)

Ooh, I would love it if there were cameos from JG and TW and JM and lots of other people! Also hoping for clips from his character's old show - Michael being hilarious on some bad mid-80s Star Trek style show could be great!

I hope there is a little bit of SV piss-taking - not slagging it off but just some gentle fun-poking and inside jokes that the most dedicated sufferers fans will get. SV does have plenty of scope for parody after all - and if they can do a fan-baiting episode like Action they ought to be able to take it as well as dish it out.

EEE, it would be great to see Michael acting "woodenly" on his old show. I bet he could totally lure Marsters on for a guest spot - imagine the possibilities? Maybe Nathan F too?

I would anticipate some version of seven years of head-shaving turning up, at least!
