Lacroix returns! [May. 15th, 2010|03:47 pm]

A few posters at IMDb have continued to bash Michael over the past few months - "he owes it to the show to return!" "he hasn't done anything since SV anyway, etc. I was waiting for show insider Lacroix to pop up and deliver one of his customary smackdowns. Now he has! Some interesting background to Michael's departure and hints that a return may still be possible in S10. Tom gets a little mention as well.

Lacroix:
Bottom line, you don't know Michael. You don't know what he's like as a person, you don't know what his true feelings are towards Smallville, and whether or not he has ever been willing to return. You don't know the circumstances behind his apparent final decision to finally say no to coming back.

Your posts about him in this thread have been nothing short of insulting.

He gave his all to the show for 7 years, and had to put up with a lot more crap than the rest of the cast. The only person who really had a tougher work schedule for most of the series run was Tom.

He was originally contracted for 7 years, which meant even if he wanted to leave the show earlier, it wasn't an option. When his contract was wrapping up, he entered negotiations with the network to come back. He entered them in good faith, but unfortunately an agreement couldn't be reached, so Michael moved on. The writers and producers had ample time to prepare for Lex's departure, but I think they were holding onto the belief that he'd be back, and they painted themselves into a corner.

He has spent the last two years recovering from major lower back surgery (which was actually to fix a problem that had already been worked on, but was buggered up from work he had to do in the show in season 7), as well as developing his own projects. He's got the pilot he's shooting for SyFy this year, which is a show he created, as well as other film and television projects he's been working on.

In that time, Smallville has approached him to return as Lex a few times. Again, Michael was open to the idea, but an agreement couldn't be reached that was mutually beneficial to both parties. Shaving his head is not an option for him, as it takes too long to grow out, and limits his opportunities as an actor until it's grown back.

Do we hope that an agreement can be reached to bring Michael back in season 10? Absolutely! I know everyone involved with the show are very fond of Michael, and would love to see him back. But, it has to be right for him too.

At the end of the day, the network is just as much, if not more so responsible for Michael not having returned to Smallville.

Here's a list of Lacroix's posts:
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur0006791/boards/profile/

* I remember an interview with Erica where she talks about how, despite his back pain, Michael stayed on location with her for hours to feed her lines. (For Fracture, I think?)
* It's interesting that that Lacroix places the blame on the network. My tendency has been to blame the producers, but perhaps they've been more willing to compromise?
* Why won't the network or producers let Michael keep his hair? I think fans would be fine with Lex with hair. SV has had worse divergences from canon.

It's the network who dole out the money. If the execs won't finance it, then the producers can't do anything about it. And people like to believe that producers have all the power and to an extent it's true--if you're a big shot, but even with how the business is with finances, that doesn't even happen (perfect example NBC cancelling Law & Order. If Dick Wolf can't make a deal with the network who he has given several successful shows, what hopes does Souders/Petersons or even Slavkin/Swimmer and AlMiles before them).

IMO, the writers were culpable in that they had a perfect ending and instead of just leaving it (I was fine with Lex being missing in the Arctic), they kept propping Lex up in episodes for no good reason in hopes that maybe they could dangle that carrot so that MR would feel obligated to fans to return, perhaps.

They can keep trying for him and if he comes back for the final episode, I'd be thrilled, but to have Lex back even in a recurring role would be regressive IMO. Clark has bigger fish to fry than a obsessed ex-boyfriend. Besides, in my heart I know where their story goes.

He could channel the movie'verse Lex! Hackman refused to shave too.

According to gawker, Dick got greedy and a bit too strong-armish with NBC. It's a shame: the original L & O is the best one.

I'd be interested in a Clex team-up to take down Darkseid, a la Justice League, ending with Lex leaping into the void to save the world (ie, his boyfriend.) But based on the inconsistent quality of the scripts, the prospect of Lex ending up in S10's version of Pandora or Escape makes me leery.

Lacroix also addresses fan-complaints that once a character leaves, they never get mentioned again. With Lex, they went the opposite route. I liked the shout-out to Lex in Salvation but will never forgive fake!Lex in Requiem.

Sure, go ahead. If you read back through Lacroix's posting history, he has shared interesting tidbits about the show and Michael before. He's very fond of Michael!

Tasabian is a good informer for fans about Michael. I didn't know about the ImDB idiots who dissed MR. I still find the insider who uses the name Lacroix (a name for a character in " Forever Knight") whomever he or she actually is, to have more accurate info on SV matters than the bletch certain producers have said in interviews and press releases.

I agree that the MR/SV stuff should be cleared up better than it was.

I like Lacroix - hope he keeps on posting through S10!

I love how Lacroix always defends Michael. And he really does bring up so many very important points. The main ones: we don't know Michael personally or what actually goes on. Love how he said the writers wrote themselves into a corner hoping he'd come back. Did they think because the story line still involved Lex that it would guilt him into returning?

As for Lex in Season 10 with hair... I'd come back to watch it. Frankly, I just want to see him in anything again. I think I'm going through withdrawal. lol

They've definitely kept Lex as more of an "actively remebered" character than any other departed character (in Clark's dream in last night's ep., there's a photo of Lex in the Daily Planet.) But it sounds like Michael has made his part of the bargaining process clear - and it includes keeping his lovely hair!

Didn't you know that all actors are bound to tv shows until they END, contracts be damned! ;)

I do think him not willing to shave his head probably causes some people a problem, but they ARE IDIOTS! Because that is such a minor thing to quibble about. Believe me, SV fans will get over it.

I hope that they can work out just one more appearance for Michael, and I hope its the series finale.

With a decent plotline, ie Darkseid, I'd be on board with that. And with a new show to promote, Michael might be more interested once they confirm S10 is the last.

Smallville is weird with hair: poor Kristin forced to wear awful extensions, Erica turned blonde, Michael's hair apparently a deal-breaker...

I liked the Salvation shout-out too. Wouldn't mind if Lex turned up in the Darkseid battle but I also loved his exit in "Arctic" so am good either way, (though I'd be pleased to have confirmation that Requiem Lex was a rogue clone.)

Michael would enjoy wearing a green cap for a CGI bald head, I think!

Glad to see that Lacroix is still defending Michael!

Interesting, sounds like he did want to leave earlier - which doesn't surprise me since there were hints of boredom earlier, and also the change in direction/quality of the show in later years - but I wonder how many years he had to do almost against his will?

It's also interesting what Lacroix says about the writers forgetting characters until it's convenient and the network interference. Again, neither surprises me, but it's nice to have a bit of confirmation.

Heh, he shut a few complainers up. A few posters seem to think Lacroix IS Michael!

Seven years is a long time for any job, particularly since the shaved head barred Michael from getting other roles. A few years back, Lacroix also said he was very surprised that Tom re-signed for S8, that he was ready to leave when Michael did. But of course, Tom had an incentive: a producer credit and a deal for a pilot.

It's also interesting what Lacroix says about the writers forgetting characters until it's convenient and the network interference. Again, neither surprises me, but it's nice to have a bit of confirmation.
It is. He's posted twice today (not about MR) so hopefully we'll get more tidbits to follow!
