Smallville review: Abandonned [Nov. 12th, 2010|09:19 pm]

Well, I liked half of it. If you like all of it & don't want the squee harshed, this may not be the review for you.

The Good
- fab & scary teaser.
- A significant amount of shirtless Tom
- SUPER BREATH!
- Clark/Tess investigating was quite fun. Clark solved the mystery of the music box and used a computer! He is his very own watchtower!
- Desaad! You are campy and fabulous and you had me at "Hello, Granny!" Godfrey, I still adore you too.
- Christine Willies is as excellent a Granny Goodness as expected.
- I sure didn't see the Pamela reveal coming. On one hand, it rings false because she was Lilian's friend and stood up for Lex against his father. On the other hand, she may have hated Lionel after he seduced her. So we'll see where it goes. I would love to see Pamela again. It's a bit sad that the one person who was completely on Lilian's side, on Lex's side, was co-opted by Lionel after all.

The Platitudes
It seems a bit of a waste to bring in Teri H. and then have her deliver a series of heavy handed Plot Points. You must fill your inner hole, Lois. And then you must fill Clark's inner hole. It would have been better IMO to have her say stuff specific to her daughter, shared memories, moments. I might have given up a tear or two for that. As it was, it was a generic "let's get this plot going" speech & despite nice acting from ED & TH...I was unmoved.

The Deja Vu
The trouble with a show in its tenth season (particularly this show) is certain scenes have become awfully familiar. Lois's maternal abandonment issues seem to merge with Lana & Chloe's maternal abandonment issues; Lois's trip to the Fortress seems very similar to previous Fortress visits. I prefer when they give Lois moments that are specifically hers - like hurling herself across Clark's desk when he tells the secret or Whitesnake power ballads. (Best Lois bit in the show, for me!)

The Els

As camptastic as ever! I couldn't decide which was funnier: Julian S's looks of mild irritation as invisible Krypton collapses around him or Helen's fluttery, whispery "Farewell!" It could only be better if Zor-El had suddenly peeked over his brother's shoulder. "Yoo-hoo! Kal-El!"

So I guess Jor-El's early season murderousness and latter season Clark-abuse is just never getting addressed, eh?

Next week: Tom directs and Aquaman gets married or something.

GOOD LORD!!! I am sitting here staring at your icon with my mouth hanging open. Ohhh So nice!

Funny when you mention this:

"You must fill your inner hole, Lois. And then you must fill Clark's inner hole."

I cried out Ohhhh Lexxxxx! lol ;-)

Nice review!

Lex could definitely take care of Clark's hole problem (and find a nice stud for Lois!)

Icon is by Ash: sexy boys!

Did you enjoy the Clark-chest tonight? A glorious unveiling!

Snerk! And seeing Jor-El and Lara standing together only served to drive the point home that our dark haired Kryptonian has parents with blond hair and our blond had at least one dark haired parent. Intrigue! Makes me wonder what Alura would look like in the SV-verse.

Wouldn't that be an epic twist: Clark is Zor-El & Alura's child!

(Incidentally it's funny that the show previously implied Lex & Tess had a romantic relationship only to reveal they're half-siblings. Oh, SV and its continuity issues!)

ETA: for Grammar-fail!

I like to imagine an El family gathering with the brothers and their wives looking at the kids and thinking "Tradesies!"

Either Lara dyes her hair or the milk man was making a lot of extra visits to the El house.

Slater's Lara has been pretty dull so I like the idea of a Kryptonian milkman fling: livens her up!

I just don't understand where the Els stand. And I don't get this seeming harping on 'Jor-El is good, really.' Or am I misreading their intent? I have been known to do that, plus shirtless usually renders me kind of....oh sorry, wandered back to shirtless.

nostalgic icon says hey.

I think they just forgot the front half of the show wherein Jor-El sent Clark to earth to conquer and asskick. Which is a waste because conquering and asskicking would be much more Julian Sands's thing than delivering platitudes.

Shirtless Tom is the saving grace of the show!

Teri H stuff was lame :/
I get that they had to shoot around her DH schedule but I wish they'd let her be a little funny, a little quirky.

The Els stuff reminded me of the Superman movie, except lamer
It's so funny to me that they look EXACTLY like Oliver's parents should look.

We're pretty much in 100% agreement, though I'm a bit more on the fence over the Granny Goodness actress. A bit on the scenery chewing for me.

Now, if they had given us far more of the Tess/Clark (perferably shirtless/Granny/Furies storyline, I think this would've been a very good ep. As it was, it felt like 2 eps smashed together that didn't compliment each other at all. At All!

And honestly, after finding out about the furies, and possibly abused children in an orphanage, am I the only one that found the ep ending with Clark and Lois going out to karoake in extremely bad taste?

It didn't occur to me...but you're not wrong. Clark told that one little girl he'd come back for her and then the script just kinda dropped her! And I'm irked that we didn't get that last Clark/Tess scene.

I'm a bit more on the fence over the Granny Goodness actress. A bit on the scenery chewing for me.
I liked her best in the hair-down final scene where she'd dropped her pretending-to-care drag. But I found her fun all the way through. I've got a weakness for scenery-gobblers.

Does not listening to anything Lois says, makes me a bad fan? o.O

LOL.

I simply don't buy what she says. Erica, i guess she's a great actress but she's not believable in my eyes. She tries way too hard and that's why i think she's annoying [Lois]. The scene with Teri didn't do anything to me. Unemotional, imo.

I wonder if the wedding is going to happen in the last episode... hmm. Pretty cliche-ish. I was more hoping for a final battle between him and Lex (in bed, lol), but i guess we will have to wait and see.

I totally agree with the Deja Vu part. I dislike that all of Clark's (wannabe)girlfriends are kind of the same. Lame.

Honestly, after a minute i didn't even listen anymore to what his parents were saying. I was wondering how come Clark has black hair when his parents were blond? My priorities. LOL. :D

Clark and Tess, i liked it. But what happened with all those kids? There was no real ending of that plot. o.O
I've read the spoiler here before so, it wasn't a surprise that Tess is a Luthor, but I wonder what will happen now. Will she tell Clark? I guess Lex knew all about it... hmm.

Oliver wasn't around to show his naked chest, so Clark had to jump in and save the day, i guess. LOL. XD

There have already been too many weddings on this show. I don't want any more! Also Clark has asked girls to marry him twice before and been married once - it feels like more repetition.

I think the writers forgot that it was implied Lex & Tess had a sexual relationship in S8....so either Lex didn't know then or found out later? It does explain Clark's interest in Tess, LOL. He can sense the Luthor in her.

Oliver wasn't around to show his naked chest, so Clark had to jump in and save the day, i guess.
I approve that those girls stripped him down right away. Well done, ladies!

YESSSSSSSSS! I agree. Lex got even 2 in 1 season, lol. But it's true, there have been def too many and it's almost like a constant pattern - Clark gets a girl and he ask her to marry him. I mean it's the 21 century, heck. o.O

w00t? Seriously? Eh.. >.<
I'm a fan of Wincest but that's the only incest i tolerate on tv, lol. :D

Hahaha I agree! ^__^

Agree about Desaad and Granny being very well cast.

I prefer when they give Lois moments that are specifically hers - like hurling herself across Clark's desk when he tells the secret or Whitesnake power ballads. (Best Lois bit in the show, for me!)

ITA, again. I didn't mind the message from her mother thing, although I wish they would have just made it her story and not tried to extend that to her having to reconcile Jor-El and Clark. But the best moments for Lois are those that are uniquely hers, like the ones you've mentioned.

It could only be better if Zor-El had suddenly peeked over his brother's shoulder. "Yoo-hoo! Kal-El!"

LOL!

Exactly. I often complain that Clark scenes are not really "about Clark." Well, here's a scene that should be about Lois, but isn't. Much better and more moving if Ella is recalling specific happy memories. Lois must have been a spitfire at age 7 - let's hear a little about that.

Agree about Desaad and Granny being very well cast.
I cannot WAIT for Desaad and Clark to meet!

It feels so good to know that I wasn't the only one who felt the way I did about this episode, after reading everyone's comments here.

It indeed did feel like two episodes smashed together into one.

and I kept on getting distracted by the small significant things, like the fact that both of Clark's biological parents were blond. uhh..... even the comics had the foresight to make one parent dark-haired. The mom was usually the brunette although on some occasions it was Jor-El who looked almost exactly like Clark.
I guess this time around they choose to have Clark take after some other relation instead of his parents? I've heard of children being the slitting image of their grandparents instead of their actual parents.

But overall although some moments were sweet for me, the rest of it was just one big cornball of WTF. horrible writing everywhere... like WTF happened to that little girl that Clark promised he would come back for?

Tess, I could see her being a Luthor. I just hope they don't have her be a stand in for Lex Luthor.
nobody can replace Lex Luthor for me! It's like running over somebody's favorite puppy and then thinking that getting them a new dog will help fill the void for them.
it doesn't. >=(

They filmed the scene of the police going to the orphanage & rescuing the girls....but then they cut that scene out! I wish they'd cut the Fortress scene instead.

TRUTH!

I know. They look like Kara's parents or Oliver's. It's very distracting!

I hope so. Because damn, if wedding-planning and engagement-angst take centre-stage, I will be pissed.

I liked the Tess reveal, but I'll admit, I thought this too. My mind instantly went back to that S1 ep.
I'm cautiously excited - it's a logical development that fits with Lionel's history and love of redheads. But it is a little sad that the one nice grown-up in Lex's life betrayed him too :(
