Happy birthday, tariel22! Tom speaks! [Mar. 28th, 2010|01:07 pm]

Happy birthday, tariel22! To celebrate the b-day of one of Tom's most loyal fans, some words from the man himself!

Tom is a good speaker: funny, thoughtful, expressive. He was the hit of the 2005 press tour, with a TV Guide reporter noting: "And Smallville’s Tom Welling won critics over with the single most engaging monologue in press-tour history." (Please someone, someday, leak footage of this!)

Tom does not speak casually in interviews. He isn't glib. He often pauses before answering a question, to really choose his words. The fangirl at ComicCon who asked him to talk slowly so he could "keep looking at her" actually was suiting her question perfectly to his style of speech.

Of course, I wish he'd talk MORE. But for now...

He appreciates the classics!
"I‘ve always remembered a great line from Sidney Poitier in which he said, “Know your lines, hit your marks and hang up your wardrobe.” And in essence, that’s what I’ve always tried to follow."

He's precise
"The idea of me directing is a lot bigger than just me. I'm in 93.4% of every episode, so in order for me to get ready to direct the episode, I have to not be in the episode before or after it. Or at least be in them in very small amounts. So there's a lot of preparation which starts now, and it's months away."

(I love the "93.4%" so much!)

He's a little bit of a rebel!
"There's some things they ask you: "Please don't do anything but walk from your trailer to set. Don't ride bikes, don't run, don't do anything. I ignore that of course."

On Clex.
This is the moment where I fell for Tom, for real. Because while Beeman is hinting on the Red commentary and Michael is teasing, Tom just comes right out and articulates it:

"The homoerotic undertones of that relationship are just mind-boggling."

He likes strong women
"When you ask a woman a question, you want to hear what she really thinks about something, not necessarily what she thinks you want to hear."

He's funny!
"The key to this scene is putting hot sauce in your mouth right before!"

He's self-deprecating
"You know what? People barely notice me! It's always Michael Rosenbaum who gets the attention. It's that bald head that gets him noticed. Last night we were staying at a hotel and I wanted to show Michael the pool, but it was fenced off and the hotel security guard just wouldn't let me past. Then Michael appears and the guard says: "Oh it's you - cool, go and have a look, but it's because I love your show ok?"

He's humble about his enormous workload Here he explains that even though Michael works fewer days than Tom, he works just as hard:

"The difference is, I might be there every day. but when he comes in, he's got more words than probably everybody altogether. We'll go into a scene and he'll go: "Clark. So when the Russian Tsar gave me this sword..." and it'll be my turn and I'll say "Wow" and then he'll go on for another half a page and I'll say "where did you get that?" and he'll go on and on. So in a sense, it equals out."

(No, it doesn't, Tom-love, but you're so sweet to say it!)

His dry sense of humour - Explaining the plot of "The Fog."
"The Fog comes to town, and the Fog is VERY upset."

More dry humour Asked by a reporter if he was tired of "teen roles":

"Well, they're doing a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof right now in New York. I really thought I had a shot at Big Daddy."

More Co-star generosity (This part of the Rosetta commentary always gets me snuffling & you can hear Michael getting a little verklempt too!)

"An important tool I learned from Michael which I seriously will...will always take with me is the value of off-screen performance. Michael does a really good job of keeping it fresh for you. He'll keep the same cues so you're allowed to....so you know when it's your turn to speak, especially when you're not listening to what he's saying, you're just waiting for his last word...but he keeps it very fresh and interesting. He'll throw other words at you. He'll raise his intensity, he'll lower it, to really help you get a performance out and it's really helpful.... It's an important thing and I'd like to take this moment to thank you, Michael."

On Christopher Reeve
"I've never met anyone who knows more about Superman...he's so proud and respects the character so much. It's really great to see."

Asked about his "crazy" fans
"Just because they're MY fans doesn't mean they're crazy! To do what we do and have people like it, enjoy it, get a thrill out of it....that's the joy of being a performer."

And finally...
"When I have children someday I'm going to be able to show them I was part of this great icon. It's a great feeling."

Happy birthday to one of the sweetest sweethearts in fandom! Thank you for keeping me up to date on all the doings of Tommy and the SV cast & crew. Hope it's a great day & a great year ♥♥♥

It's so rare to see Tommy look like a dork - albeit a super-cute dork!

Tom is very deep, and so respectful of Michael. They really are yin and yang - I love the 'homoerotic' line - he really gets it all!
They were such a perfect fit, the darlings!

It's from an interview Tom gave to More magazine in 2002.

This picspam is amazing. *claps*
You picked some great lines of Tom's interviews.

//"The key to this scene is putting hot sauce in your mouth right before!"//
LOL I haven't heard that before!

And I loved his comment about Clex, too. He was the only one who gave an answer without teasing or laughing about it.

He says it on the Rosetta commentary!

I love that too - he knows Clex is a very serious topic!

Happy Birthday, tariel22!!

I LOVED this:

"Asked about his "crazy" fans
"Just because they're MY fans doesn't mean they're crazy!"

Oh, Tas. This is such a treasure trove! I haven't heard most of these quotes before, which is mind-boggling. I thought I'd read/watched every interview this man had given! Thank you, thank you! (And what an apt present for one of the biggest Tommy fans in the world! <3)

Excited to have found some quotes you didn't know!

I haven't heard most of these quotes before, which is mind-boggling. I thought I'd read/watched every interview this man had given!
I went back to re-listen to some oldies which was lots of fun! The one quote I looked for but couldn't find was Tom joking that he & Jamie have matching super-thongs - love when he's playful!

Oh, Tas, I don't know how to begin to thank you for this!! What an amazing collection of quotes! Unbelievably, most of them are new to me, so it was truly a delight to discover anew why I love this man beyond all reason. What a guy! Intelligent, funny, thoughtful, and always ready with a comment or answer that is far from being some cookie-cutter response, but rather is full of warmth and insight.

I remember being impressed that Tom even knew who Big Daddy was, much less had the quick wit to use him in a joke! :D

The pics are wonderful, too, of course. You've included so many that are my favorites. The end of Perry is a moment of perfect beauty in every way (the dialogue, the music, the sun, that glorious crane shot), but most of all for Tom himself. Look at Tom directing for the first time, every inch the man in that BTS still, instead of the boy he was still playing on the show. His profile makes me weak in the knees, and his hair looks so sexy, as if he's been raking it out of his eyes with his fingers as he works.

I LOVE that pic of Tom and Jamie, it tells me that he has a true partner in this life, someone who loves him for him, and not the trappings of the success he has found. I think that ABC Family special has some of my favorite moments between Tom and Michael ever. And of course I adore that shirtless pic from The Fog. *sigh*

I'm honored to have such an awesome post dedicated to me. You've not only given me a gift to treasure, you've given another gem to all of fandom. Thank you so much!! *hugs*

I'm glad you liked it & hope that you had a fun & relaxing day yesterday!

I remember being impressed that Tom even knew who Big Daddy was, much less had the quick wit to use him in a joke!
I think his joke sailed right over the interviewer's head!

His profile makes me weak in the knees, and his hair looks so sexy, as if he's been raking it out of his eyes with his fingers as he works.
I would love to comb his hair with my fingers, pet that brow...

The end of Perry is a moment of perfect beauty in every way (the dialogue, the music, the sun, that glorious crane shot), but most of all for Tom himself.
He's perfection in a simple white T. No one can be prettier!
