Unspoilery Glee thought [Nov. 23rd, 2010|09:26 pm]

Watching Glee tonight, I realize...it's not really an ensemble show any more. There are leads and there are supporting characters. And of the younger characters, Kurt is the lead. He gets the most screen time, the most dramatic plotline.

Now, sure, the writing isn't always stellar and the episode quality fluctuates wildly. But it amazes me that Glee has subtly brought Kurt to the forefront and kept him there: the first ever gay lead in a US network show. Ryan Murphy using, then undermining the conventions of teen TV. And on FOX!

I like Kurt a lot, and I sure do prefer the focus on him over Rachel or Finn or Will. However, I do feel like the show has just gone crazy overboard with it. This past episode was like some sort of testimonial to the wonder of Kurt. It was a little nuts.

That's what fascinated me, that the gay character was at the epicentre of the melodramatic plotline for once, instead of being the heroine's "supportive best friend" or making witty remarks from the sidelines. It's like an All About Eve where Colfer snuck in and ran away with Lea M's spotlight!

That said, even for Glee, this was a mish-mash script. The wedding was planned in a day? The parents were okay with the wedding being hijacked by the Glee Club and all the speeches being about Kurt? And GAH, waste of Carol Burnett.
