|Spoilers for "Descent"

Smallville episodes are airing a day early in Canada. Don't go behind the cut if you want to stay unspoiled!
There's far too much retcon canonization of Lionel in this ep. mostly delivered by Tom, who does his best....but since we (and Clark) recently saw Lionel abusing Lex & Lillian in "Fracture", it doesn't really work. And Chloe intoning that Lionel "died for all of us" just made me giggle.
What I liked about this episode"
- The gorgeous angsty ache between Clark and Lex. A wonderful long, talky scene at the manor where Michael and Tom act their shapely asses off.
Lex: I did try, Clark. In fact, when I first met you, you inspired me....
- Michael looks beautiful throughout: crystalline tears in those big, sad eyes. There's even a sob at one point! Oh, Lex....
- The notion that if Lex gets hold of the two "Veritas" keys, Clark will be forced to "do his bidding" (yes, that's a direct quote from Chloe!) has Clex porn written all over it. Chloe: "He'll have total and complete control over you!" So....off with the clothes and into the hot tub, then? Right-o!
- I don't believe for a moment that "L'il Lex" is actually dead. As long as Michael is playing Lex, Lex will have a soul 'cause Our Boy will put it there.
Lex remembers Lionel taking him to the aerospace museum: "He knew I loved things that could fly...."
What I liked best about the episode? The silent Clex scene at the end. Lex has forbidden anyone from coming to Lionel's funeral; Clark comes anyway. They stare at each other. When Lex walks away, he passes Clark and though Clark doesn't see it, there's a tiny smile on Lex's face. What that conveyed to me is this: even though the current state of their relationship is beyond fucked-up, Lex was secretly happy that Clark came, still desperately needs Clark in his life, still doesn't want to be left alone. And Clark has shouldered Lex as his responsibility: saving him, while saving the world from him.
(And despite the serious nature of the episode, Lex gives Clark a lingering up & down look at one point: surely Michael's little gift to the Clex fans!)
