Spoilers for "Arctic" [May. 14th, 2008|08:03 pm]
tasabian
Smallville episodes are airing a day early in Canada. Don't go behind the cut if you want to stay unspoiled!

Will this turn out to be a fan-divisive episode? I don't know, but I LOVED it. Smallville frequently lifts from other shows and this ending is straight out of the Joss Whedon playbook. Lex is totally Buffy telling Angel she loves him and then sacrificing his true love to save the world. And the thing is, he doesn't leave Clark, doesn't try saving himself. A world without Clark is not worth living in. Clark is cradled snug in Lex's arms and Lex stays right there to die with him. "I love you like a brother, Clark, but it has to end this way." (note the present tense: Lex has never stopped loving Clark.)

*buckets of tears from me*

It also echoes one of my favourite latter SV episodes "Nemesis", where Lex has the chance to save himself by abandonning Clark, but instead chooses to stay with him, locked together in their sexy fate.

Lovely performances by both guys - but MR gets the more glamourous role and is absolutely fantastic. Voice hoarse, eyes shiny. When he's holding Tom in his lap, at one point it looks like he's about to dip down for a kiss....I wonder if there's an out-take where they do kiss? I can totally see Michael and Tom throwing that in as a gift to fans...

Oh, Smallville. You get a lot wrong but you got Clex completely right

Okay, you've got me wanting to see it now! I've been kind of annoyed at how inconclusive it sounds like, I really wanted SV to end with Clark flying or something, as Lex watches. But that scene was very Clexy?

I found it off-the-charts Clexy, especially the way MR plays it! Swoony, romantic, lovely. I was worried Clark was going to toss Lex into the Phantom Zone so this was much better.

But the TWoP reviews so far have not been positive (not about Clex, more about Clark & the girls in his life).

omg i so TOTALLY have to see this.

the whole POINT of Lex is that he still, and will always, love Clark. He hates that he does but he can't stop. Everything he does SCREAMS scorned love!

i have GOT to get my landlord to let me tivo this!

I love that he doesn't try to escape the fortress. Just gathers up Clark and waits for the end. *sob*

I should caution you that my love for this ep. is not shared by TWoP but I had my Clex blinders on (per usual) and cared about nothing else!

I hope so! I adored it - but like I said above, it may prove to be a divisive ep.

It's appropriate that Michael's last scene is holding Tom...*sigh*

Oh, wow -- now I have the shivers like mad, and I can't wait to see this! Do you think this was the 'final scene' AlMiles always claimed they had in mind for the end of the series?

Now I have to wonder how they'll start out the eighth season (which I refuse to watch unless MR changes his mind and returns). No doubt Clark will somehow rise from the destruction of the Fortress (or maybe he'll be saved by Kara or someone), but Lex will end up in a coma, or his body won't be found and he'll be presumed dead. *cries for brave, self-sacrificing Lex*

I expect Lex will be missing and Oliver's guys will rescue Clark? I'm worried they will show glimpses of Lex - a bald head from behind, etc. It's not Lex if it's not MR!

Heh, I always assumed that would involve Lana but I liked this much better!

But, I hated Clark in this episode. He sucked big time!

Lex wasted his time. Nothing happens to Clark and Lex is either dead or somewhere...we don't even know and what does it matter that Lex knows about Clark? Nothing is going to come of it.

He definitely needed better lines. Where was his counter-speech to Lex? "I loved you. I looked up to you....etc." Poor TW never gets to make the speeches.

Lex wasted his time. Nothing happens to Clark and Lex is either dead or somewhere...we don't even know and what does it matter that Lex knows about Clark? Nothing is going to come of it.
Plot-wise in terms of S8 does it lead anywhere? No. But I'm unlikely to watch S8 without Michael anyway & I've learned to enjoy what I can get from SV: Lex holding Clark while declaring his dysfunctional love hits me straight in the heart.

But I bet lots of folks will agree with you!

It sounds like Lex will be "presumed missing" or something . . . urgghhh. Stupid SV, what a dumb way for Lex to go out! I am SO GLAD I won't have to watch anymore after tonight. *kicks SV*

But Lex holding Clark sounds like a good scene!

I was afraid he'd get chucked into the Phantom Zone so this was a relief. But yeah, the explanation in the S8 premiere is likely to be dumb.

But Lex holding Clark sounds like a good scene!
Worked for me!

I hope you like it, kris! But see kpjmm's comment above for some of the things you might very well not like. TWoP's reaction has been 99% negative (with me the lonely 1%!)

I just watched the episode and my Clexheart just went pitter-patter at the beginning of their confrontation and then just about burst at the ending. You know, I was pretty much resigned agreeable to watching Season 8 but with this perfect Clexy ending, I don't think I want to come back anymore.

serafina, that's exactly how I feel. I'm happy to leave them in each others' arms, with Lex's declaration of love hanging in the air.

I joined you in having a positive review on TWoP (This is Eurybia from there btw... I just found your LJ! Hi!). It broke my Clexy heart, but in a good way. While Clark didn't get great lines, I'm going to believe he'll rise from the rubble with a different POV- Lex's final gift to him. Of course, the show will invalidate that. But for the summer, I'm good.

And I totally thought this was straight outta Joss Whedon too! :D

Re: Future Lex... I'm actually pretty terrified that Lex is dead and that the "iconic" Lex Luthor of Superman's future will be a clone or something.

Hey, Eurybia! *friends you*

Ooh, I hope so. I hope he always remembers that Lex loves him!

Future Lex... I'm actually pretty terrified that Lex is dead and that the "iconic" Lex Luthor of Superman's future will be a clone or something.
I'm thinking they'll play the amnesia card....but if so, I want a Kiss of Lethe, damnit!

And I totally thought this was straight outta Joss Whedon too!
A fine source to rip off! I was so worried that the final Clex scene would be horrible and cold, mirroring the AU in "Apocalypse"....but "Arctic" shows so clearly that SV!Lex is not like that, and that he and Clark will always circle back to each other. *squishes them*

Thank you! In an interview, Michael described the scene as "operatic", and indeed it is: tragic lovers forever entwined. *happy sigh*
