Michael Music & picspam! [Jun. 22nd, 2008|09:10 pm]
[Tags|, ]

From Seventeen Magazine, 2002

Q: If you weren’t famous tomorrow, what would you do for a living?
Michael: I would be a ‘70s rock DJ. I collect T-shirts from 1970s rock bands.

So behold ....the Rosenbaum Summer Music Mix, volume 1! (Please let me know if any of the links are wonky!)

Perhaps the song Michael has mentioned most often is a classic hit by Pat Benetar!

Michael: My mother dressed me as Pat Benatar... and I sang "Shadows of the Night", just for the lark of it.

(He's still a fan - went to see Pat in concert in 2006!)

Shadows of the Night

Of all his music -themed t-shirts, there's one that gets worn more often than any other!

From a 2008 radio interview:

Michael explains why he's not like Lex:
"I wear a pink Twisted Sister t-shirt and I play whiffleball....and that's it!"

And that's why we love you, darling! (When I was a kid, I was so impressed that Twisted Sister included the word "condescending" in their lyrics.  Intellectual hair metal!)

I was super-excited to learn last summer that Michael is a Morrissey/Smiths fan. A fan who saw him at the Morrissey concert wrote:
...a few days ago at the Hollywood Bowl, as Morrissey was singing "please please please let me get what I want", Michael stood up on his chair and was singing full force to the song. he turned around to the people around, including me and a couple of friends, and was getting everyone involved in singing at the top of their lungs. It was so awesome! he was so into the song and the show..it was a highlight of the evening"

Here's the t-shirt....

And here's the song!

Most of Michael's favourite songs are favourites of mine too - but there's one exception! In a 2006 interview, he talks about going to an Ambrosia concert, adding "I'm weird, man!" I'd never heard of Ambrosia - or so I thought - but then it turned out I did have a song of theirs on a really old compilation CD. It's romantic, funky, soft rock - right up Our Boy's alley!

You're the biggest part of me

In a 2003 interview, Michael talked about his crush on Olivia Newton-John. And of course, he has the t-shirt to prove it!

Here's my favourite song by Olivia!

Michael seems to really love his disco divas. One of his more eclectic outfits featured camoflauge pants & a fabulous Grace Jones T!

And here's one of Grace's greatest hits!

I need a man

Next to Pat Benetar, Michael has perhaps had most to say about his love for Chicago. (In one Carson Daly interview, he seems ready to throw down if Carson mocks them!) This "Defamer" poster got to witness Michael's passion first hand:

"At the June 13th Huey Lewis and the News and Chicago show at the Greek, I was sitting about 6 rows back when my eyes were essentially accosted by a man that I can only describe as a SUPERFAN. He single-handedly roused the crowd to dance, sing, scream and clap. He knew EVERY song, had innovative dance moves for every opportunity and guzzled beer like it was his job. By the end of the show, he had pushed his way to the front of the venue and was simultaneously chucking back more alcohol and dancing with women who were at least three times his age.... .Boy loves his oldies. Who was it? MICHAEL ROSENBAUM from "Smallville." The boy can dance and drink and has great taste in music. I am sold."

Hee! Me, too! Here's a Chicago classic from 1982:

Love me tomorrow

It always gives me a patriotic thrill when Michael wears a t-shirt of a Canadian band. Here's our loverboy, sporting a Loverboy T!

Loverboy had lots of hits in Canada - not  so many in other parts of the world! Here's the song Michael probably knows by them:

Working for the Weekend

An even more obscure Canadian band is Glass Tiger.....so I was very excited to see their faces on Michael's sexy chest in this fan-pic (taken at Six Flags in 2005)

They may be one hit wonders - but I defy you to get their hit out of your head! Yes, that's Bryan Adams singing back-up.

Don't forget me when I'm gone

In "Shear Love", when Rodney first reunites with Sylvia, he immediately starts singing "Voices Carry" by Til Tuesday....an improv by Michael? His director friend James Gunn mentioned on his website that the lead singer of Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann, recently came to his brother's birthday party. Michael was invited too: wonder if he sang to her? (When I was in high school, Aimee was such a style icon - we all loved her hair!)

Voices Carry

I wasn't a huge fan of Mike and the Mechanics....but every guy I knew liked them. I guess Michael likes them too:

All I need is a miracle

Michael rarely mentions new music. In a 2006 interview when he's asked if his SV cast-mates ever go to concerts with him, he says "I can't get them to go! They're all about "Coldplay". And the "White Stripes." Aw! (And he actually puts air quotes around "Coldplay" which is so him!) However, an SV guest star this year (Chris Kelly, who played the lab tech in "Lara) revealed that Michael does like at least one modern band - he's a fan of The National. Me, too - their cd is amazing. Here's my favourite track:

Fake Empire

In his "goodbye" letter from Smallville, Michael writes: "Mostly, I want to thank Greg Beeman for directing the "Oh Sherry" video, by Steve Perry, back in the '80s."

It is a great video - and a great song too!

Oh Sherry

One last song....when Michael and Chris decided to sing karaoke on "CRIBS", do you think they debated which song to perform? Or did they know right away?! "You do the jitterbug...." (And Michael totally makes the sun shine brighter than Doris Day!)

Wake me up before you go-go

Thanks! I grew up with the same songs, so it always tickles me when he gets all excited over some '80's band.

This was awesome! I am amazed at the work you put in to pick the photos and include the songs.

This was so much fun!

And I had never read that account of him at the Huey/Chicago show! What incredible energy and enthusiasm!

These are fab!

I'm playing them here with the windows wide open and next door's dog just started howling along with the Chicago one. And now it's whimpering for mercy during the Glass Tiger track. I don't think it appreciates Michael's taste in music...

HA! A dog with elite tastes! I mostly like Michael's songs - Mike and the Mechanics are the glaring exception. Oh, and Debbie Gibson (though I suspect he mostly likes Debbie herself!)
