Michael's return to SV? (No Spoilers) [Jul. 27th, 2008|05:22 pm]

At ComicCon today, the SV producers continued to court Michael:

Brian Peterson: “Obviously Michael Rosenbaum is one of the best actors. You definitely haven’t heard the last of Lex. The door is open to Michael Rosenbaum when he’s done going out and pursing his other endeavors.”

(This is a little presumptuous, surely? Never mind! Tell us more about the "open door.")

Here's Peterson earlier this week: "Michael is fantastic. His rendition of Lex Luthor helped make the show what it is today. Obviously, we were very sad to see him go. He's pursuing his own interests and we're hoping the door is definitely open for him to return. We've not seen the last of Lex Luthor."

(Wait - Tell me the status of "the door" again? It's open, right?)

In contrast, producer Darren Swimmer, attempted the "playing hard to get" approach:

Newsrama: With Michael are you pacing yourself on calling on him to reappear for the true end of the series?

Darren Swimmer: It’s too early to presume that season eight will be the last, so it would be premature to make any kind of a call.

(Did Tom read this and hit the roof? "What the hell????" )

Swimmer: "Once we made the shift in our minds, we moved forward with the new characters and dynamics. We aren’t constantly saying to ourselves, “Damn, I wish we could use Lex in this scene.”

This, I don't believe for one minute. I think they're suffering through a constant state of Lex-lessness and Rosenbaum Withdrawal. "Come back to us, baby...."

Producer Todd Slavkin had this to say about the show ending: “We hope that doesn’t happen for a long, long time, but when it does happen, fans won’t be disappointed…”

A "long long time"? So...five more years? They'll keep the rest of the cast hostage until Rosenbaum agrees to come back? (Incidentally, of all the producers I am most jealous of Slavkin because MR played the following practical joke on him: he discovered which room Slavkin was staying in at a spa, called him up and told him he had a "package delivery" and when Slavkin opened the door, Michael was standing there naked! This is obviously the Best Joke Ever. In my head, Michael plays this joke on Tom on a regular basis.)

Enough with producers; Time for some Pretty!

This scene in "Labyrinth" made me sob but it's great to see the boys having fun on set. Photo credit: andreas_ri

Now, Tom could be smiling at what Allison is saying or at the photographer....but since this is "Freak" and he's looking all mischievous , I'm going to pretend he's looking at his director and remembering making naughty doodles all over Michael's script. credit: andreas_ri

Tom has such a beautiful, happy smile that makes him look like a naughty little boy.

As for the comments on MR, am I the only thats getting the impression of some hard feelings?

I think they just sincerely want him back, at least for a couple of episodes, and are going to keep saying so repeatedly! If there were bad feelings, they'd probably be quite content to relinquish him altogether, ie "Michael was great and we wish him well with his future projects....etc". He's apparently good friends with Slavkin/Swimmer.

He does! Oh, those pinch-able cheeks!

Tom's smile is one of the most wonderful things on the planet

*loves*

And OMG if Michael reads these interviews there's no way he's going to come back. Not that I expected him to anyway

*fumes at the presumption of these people*

It's glorious! A natural wonder like Niagara Falls.

He's probably quite entertained by the different tactics being used to court him! I'm hoping for rank desperation next, "...the crew cries every day for you. Tom won't come out of his trailer. Steve from Wardrobe is inconsolable..."

"The door is open to Michael Rosenbaum when he’s done going out and pursing his other endeavors."

This cracks me up, because it makes it sound like it's some silly little thing MR needs to get over, rather than the serious pursuit of other opportunities. As much as I'm going to miss Michael, I kind of hope he's way too busy to even consider caving in and coming back for a single episode of Smallville, much less shave his head and have to take months to grow his hair back again. I'm still rooting for your AU idea where Lex has hair and is Clark's BFF, though. :)

Did Tom read this and hit the roof? "What the hell????"

I wondered the same thing when I read that, and I love the visual you just gave me of TW freaking out. hee! After the spin off remark at Comic Con, I'm guessing that's what they mean when they hint about additional seasons? Otherwise I maintain they're clearly delusional. *nods*

I love the Labyrinth pic! It reminds me of Michael's quote from the S6 Companion about how they couldn't stop laughing while making Nemesis. I want footage! *pouts* It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to see that MR and TW are obviously still good friends after years on the show.

I like your interpretation of that BTS pic from Freak, and I think you're probably right. Tom looks so adorable there! I love that pic. Thanks for posting the pretties, and for the update!

That's it, exactly. "Oh, my man may go out and have his flings on the side....but those affairs, they don't count. And he always comes home to me."

We need Tom to give his first interview (in what, three years?) to get a sense of his reaction to this. These producers seem to think if they say something often enough, it becomes true: Tom will re-sign for another three years, Michael will come back, the plot lines will make sense by the finale...

I love the Labyrinth pic! It reminds me of Michael's quote from the S6 Companion about how they couldn't stop laughing while making Nemesis.
The camaraderie among the cast is always so heartening!

I find this funny, but it also makes me anxious for Michael to have a fantastic project to be involved in.

He's got three Cons coming up soon---Toronto and Atlanta. Then I think Collectormania in the UK, right?

Maybe he's taking some time to decompress before he goes back to work? After all, he did have a rough year, what with his schedule being thrown off because of the writer's strike, and also his back problems.

He may also be busy writing, since it seems his Beeman pilot deal is back on...I'd love a new interview to let us know what he's doing. He was at a charity event yesterday so we might get a Young Hollywood vid soon...

Yup...I'm still wondering if his schedule will let him get to all three. *hopes*

Am I bad to hope, sort of, that these "other endeavors" fall through, or at least are a bit laggard in presenting themselves, so MR might entertain the offer of at least a few SV eps. Provided, of course, that they make it worthwhile by giving Lex a decent little arc.

Then again, I'm a bit relieved that I don't have to worry about Lex-abuse this coming season. At least when Lex is within earshot!

(p.s.: Lex is so beautiful in your icon!)

Maybe if they offer him script approval....I'm torn. I want to see Michael and Tom together again, but not if it wrecks the Clexy ending of "Arctic" I'd love an AU!Lex to pop up, where the Clex can fall in love all over again and Michael can keep his hair.

Lex is so beautiful in your icon!
It was made by the talented quasiexistent! Lex always looks so pretty in the blue light of the caves.

I think are upset about losing Michael, but I can't blame him for leaving, though. Also, Peterson's quote comes off a bit dickish.

And what about the status of the door?!?! Is it still open? Will it close? Can it even be *gasp* locked?

I love the BTS shots. So cute. Tom's smile makes me so very happy. :D

They love taking a metaphor and running it into the ground (See also: most SV scripts) So I expect we'll be hearing lots more about open doors over the next few months!

Also, Peterson's quote comes off a bit dickish.
It seems to imply Michael will venture into the non-SV world, then come running back, chastened. I bet Peterson fantasizes about this: "Michael will be all "I'm sorry, man!" and then I'll be all "What? It's nothing! I love you, dude!" and then we'll hug and Tom will agree to do five more seasons."

I want a delivery like Slavkin got!!!!!! ;)

when he’s done going out and pursing his other endeavors

lol They sound like Michael's a kid out 'sowing his wild oats'. I sincerely hope he didn't mean that to sound as belittling as it came out. :P

lol I wonder how many blowjob jokes Michael made during that scene in Labyrinth? ;)

Totally sounds like that. "He'll be back, when the taste for freedom is gone."

I want a delivery like Slavkin got!!!!!! ;)
Me, too! (And Michael wonders why the writers are now obsessed with him!)

All this going on about how open the door is is starting to sound a little desperate to me. They're trying to persuade us that the show is going to be fabulous and no one will miss Lex at all, but at the same time they are ready and willing to drop everything and work Lex back into the story should MR show the slightest inclination that he is willing to return? Yes, how very convincing.

And the "long, long time"? I think someone needs to start a 'Save Tom' campaign.

Every interview, the status of Michael gets mentioned! As talented as the new cast members may be, there's just no filling that vast Lex-shaped hole & the writers know it.

And the "long, long time"? I think someone needs to start a 'Save Tom' campaign.
I'm aching to know Tom's reaction to this. I'm imagining him slamming down his lap top: "Oh, hell no!"

Who could lose someone like Rosenbaum and not go into withdrawal?

If there is a Merciful Deity in the universe, Michael plays this joke on Tom EVERY DAY. *sighs wistfully*

And when Michael's not in Vancouver, he plays it on Tom via email attachments and video.....yes.

Who could lose someone like Rosenbaum and not go into withdrawal?
It's true! The writers deserve our sympathy, in their Rosey-less state!
