Spoiler grumbling [Nov. 9th, 2008|04:49 pm]

rosenbaummedia has lovely big versions of the Michael & Chris at the Madonna concert photos! (And other new pics as well.) I've noticed some bloggers have confused Michael with Kevin Connolly of "Entourage", who is a full foot shorter than Michael!

Smallville: Though it's not the same show without Lex, and I pine for Rosey every single Thursday, I do think S8 has been chugging along reasonably well. Tess and Davis are very well-cast and played, it's great to see an angst-free Clark (and Tom in pretty outfits); Allison & Erica seem to be enjoying their plotlines.

However, the more things change, the more one thing stays the same....

Recent spoilers reveal that Lana's goodbye video to Clark was actually made at gunpoint by Lex's minions. She did not leave Clark to start a new life, rather she was whisked away and is being kept alive through an experimental medical process. In "Bride", Oliver goes looking for Lex and finds Lana instead.

Why I don't like this:

The chronology of it doesn't make sense. In "Arctic", Clark dispatches Brainiac and rushes straight back to Lana. There's no time for Lex's people to have forced her to make the video and then taken her into hiding. Furthermore, in "Arctic" Lex is entirely consumed by his pursuit of the Traveller, then once he knows it's Clark, he's focussed on his trip to the Fortress. From MR's body language on the plane, you can tell this is the point of no return for Lex. He expects to die up there, with Clark:

Reconfiguring Lana's video means retconning MR's performance - and Kristin's too. She doesn't play the scene like a woman at gun-point; she plays the scene like Lana's making the hardest decision of her life. (I'm no fan of Clana and it even managed to move my stony heart a little!)

I wasn't a fan of how Lana was written in S 5/6, as a passive victim of circumstance and uncaring men. But I liked her much better in S7; she was less the chick on the pedestal and more like one of the gang. Her goodbye to Clark and departure from SV seemed like a real chance for character growth. She had made this tough decision and when she returned to Smallville, she'd have moved on with her life, and be ready to be Clark's friend and confidante again.

This spoiler puts Lana back in the victim role. She didn't want to leave Clark, Lex made her. It also puts the burden of guilt, mercifully absent so far in S8, right back on Clark's shoulders. He's going to have major angst that he moved on with his life while Lana was locked up in some facility.

Kristin had not been permitted to cut her or alter her hair since S1. She talked about this in Rolling Stone, way back when: "I can't do anything with it. Like whenever I do a TV interview, I'm not even allowed to wear it up. It has to be down, because I'm going to be known for my hair. I can't cut it or make it choppy or put streaks in it, because Lana, the small-town girl, wouldn't do that." In June this year, she cut her hair, and wrote: "For three years I have been wanting to cut my hair. It’s been long for about 15 bloody years. If I had not been working on a television series I would have cut it a while ago. I suppose this is kind of an expression of freedom."

Her new hair is adorable. But will the show present this as another atrocity perpetrated on Lana? LEX MADE ME DO IT.

This spoiler also impacts Clark & Lois. I'm not really a Clois 'shipper but I do enjoy that it's a lighthearted, angst-free relationship. If Lana had freely made the decision to leave, Clark could embrace new feelings for Lois (and she for him) with no residual guilt. But if Lana returns still loving him, that means Clark will be torn, setting up more of the love triangle angst which so thoroughly bored me in S6.

Michael's stand-in, Morris Chapdelaine, started work on the SV set this past Friday. There have been rumours that Michael might consent to do some voiceover work in upcoming eps. So during the Lana arc. it wouldn't surprise me if we get some shots of the back of Morris's head, combined with snippets of Michael's voice, meant to convey Lex. I can't say I'm looking forward to that.

In conclusion, here's a quote from SV producer Greg Beeman quote from 2004, which to me encapsulates the errors the show made with Lana in S5/6:
"As a dramatic instrument, Clark needed to have something that made him want to move forward, and so Lana was that. She was in fact sort of an object."

(Er, Greg an object is not a character.) The last word goes to Kristin, from a girlsbydesign blog entry in 2008;
My own personal experience is that MOST producers are men, in fact most directors I have worked with are men. And although men are amazing and driven, they can never truly understand the female experience. Just as we cannot understand theirs....I have also experienced being new to this business, and really feeling indebted to the people I work for. Telling men, especially men that employ you, that you want something different than what they want, has been a challenge for me, and I suspect it is for other young actresses (and older) as well.

And one of my favourite Lana 'caps from last year. Objectifying Michael! Rip that shirt open! That's it,....lovely.

Oh, ugh. This is just terrible. They're going to destroy Lex and Lana. AGAIN.

Perhaps it won't be quite so bad for the RosenFans, as Michael won't be onscreen? (Not as bad as the fake!baby arc was for me, anyway!). I expect any flashbacks will involve retroactively inserting Tess into the plot. I checked over at Sweet, a Clana board, and many of the posters were very unhappy to see her back in victim mode. I was curious what they'd think, as I'm not much of a Lana fan, but their reaction pretty much mirrored mine.

Maybe it won't be as gloomy as it sounds? I loved that Lex made his SV exit with Clark in his arms, saying "I love you." The Lana fans deserve a nice send-off for her too.

This is just me nattering....maybe the spoilers are wrong, or will play out a bit differently. I just don't want the clouds of angst to return (or for the show to use a Fake!Michael, much as I like Morris!)

In "Power", Oliver goes looking for Lex and finds Lana instead.

Are you sure that's right? 'Power' is ep 13 and the ep that has Oliver going off to find Lex and finding Lana instead is 'Bride', ep 10.

This is all very disheartening. I just don't know what to think of all this.

I was extremely impressed with Kristen's comments. How true they are, and how insightful.

Well, remember it's just me spit-ballin' and may all play out in a much less gloomy fashion (hopefully.) I hope Michael sets firm rules for the use of his sexy voice!

She seems to have a good head on her shoulders!

The spoilers make me want to punch things, but: OMG! Kristen's new haircut is amazing! It's sooooo much better than the way they made her wear it. I'm so very happy to see that. :D

She looks adorable - very retro-'80's-Paris-chic!. Sadly, she mentioned in her GirlsByDesign blog that she got some hate-mail for her haircut: some fans took it as apparently distancing herself from Lana, as though long hair was somehow crucial to the character!

I'm hoping I'm seeing the the spoilers through a pessimistic prism and all will be well...*bites nails*

Nothing at all about the Lana spoilers sound good to me. I was trying to keep an open mind about her reappearance, and I was hoping that we wouldn't see the same mistakes repeated from the old regime. But alas, this looks like more of the same crap, different day. And I'm really afraid of how this is going to derail Clark's story thus far. Heck, if looks as if they are derailing a bunch of stories to accomodate her. I don't get it. I was really hoping that they were going to allow Lana to come back a more mature woman, more in control of her own life, and allow her and Clark to get the closure they need. Guess not :(

You know, I didn't intend to even watch a Lex-less S8...but happy Clark has pulled me in and kept me. I love seeing TW dressed like a grown-up and not having to constantly play angsty scenes. I don't want to see him beating himself up again over something that isn't his fault, nor do I want my beloved Clex ending tarnished.

I was actually looking forward to seeing friendly, angst-free, happy-memories Clana play out. It must be a drag for Kristin to have to come back for more angst.

And trying to portray Lex, sans MR, is a mistake I think.

Wow. I don't know what to think about this. I had read some of the sides that had Lana being captured/experimented on (or at least that's what I thought) by Lex henchmen, but I was thinking that maybe Lana had left Smallville to try and take down Lex on her own and she was captured or something. Now with this new info...Did Lex have Lana captured because he was trying to help her or cure her? Or was he still in love with her and he wanted her for himself? I'm confused and curious to see all of this.

Supposedly, Lana is recovered enough during Bulletproof (I think?) to have a (psuedo) dinner date with Clark and a confrontation with Tess so I have no idea what the hell is going on.

I am not looking forward to seeing a mopey, guilt-ridden Clark again so hopefully either that won't happen, or it won't happen for too long.

Oh! I thought her haircut was going to be part of her whole Independent, New Woman thing. Are they going to say that they shaved her head for brain surgery or something and that's all it's grown back so far?

Thanks for the info. Forewarned is forearmed or something like that...

Based on what I've seen in the spoiler thread at TWoP, the treatments are keeping Lana alive so it was presumably done for her benefit, though seemingly against her will?

WORD!

I was hoping for a fun confrontation with Tess...maybe the angsty part will be over by then? I hope Tess stands up for Lex in absentia!

Thanks for the info. Forewarned is forearmed or something like that...
Take it with a grain of salt! You're always better informed about SV spoilers than I am, so maybe it won't be as grim as it sounds!

I just looked at the pictures of Michael from the Madonna concert. Does his t-shirt say "Nerd?" That's great! Also, he's wearing those jeans again!!! I wonder if he has a million pairs or just one that he wears over and over again?

My theory about why Michael is covering his face when he talks to Hayden is because she smells funny. ;-)

I think it's the same pair of jeans - he tends to get "attached" to certain clothing items!

You know what? I wash my hands of these assholes. I can't deal with them pinning things on Lex that he couldn't possibly have anything to do with and they're trying to do it even now when they don't have Micheal there to make it awesome.

God, it's going to be like Chef leaving all over again.

It's all Lex's fault. Always Lex's fault, with no attempt by anyone other than a single minion or two to understand the depth of his motivation. Everything that happened to Lana and Chloe is put on his shoulders even though he was probably UNDER ICE at the time.

Why don't they just work with what they have, instead of throwing us back to S6 soap-opera, Lana-victim fest again? Yuck.

Yes, the Lana-fans don't seem keen for a return to victim mode either. Clana are supposed to end as pals, not on a big pile of Angst!

Leave poor Lexy alone! In my mind, he's spying on Clark from an Arctic Fortress, with smitten Yetis to do his bidding.

Hahahaha!!! Oh, god. I hope so. I've had a couple of ideas for Lex and where he is, but they didn't involve smitten Yetis. One involved Fortress Sue beaming him nekkid to Detroit with no memory.

Accept no retcons! Lex loves Clark! like a brother He destroyed the Fortress Sue for the good of mankind!

Yeah, on Lana, I was looking forward to them you know, not treating her like an ultimate victim forever. Clark needs to realize that she's bad news. And Lana needs to realize the benefits of embracing her villainous side when most of the good guys will fall for your doe eyes and shut of their brains.

Well, I always thought that the Return Of The Lana would ruin everything, but it sounds like it will be even worse than I thought...

Maybe Lex had his people hold Lana captive for the sake of the world - such evil cannot be allowed to escape! And then he went off to die knowing that he was leaving the world a better, safer, less pink, Lana-free place. And then Oliver goes and ruins it by letting her out.

I've been ignoring the existence of the eighth season, but I'd told myself that if they convinced MR to appear in an episode, or even just to lend his voice to one, I'd watch it. Now...I'm not at all sure I want to see THIS. *wibbles*

MR and TW gave us a nearly perfect CLex send-off in "Arctic." Why do TPTB want so desperately to ruin it?
