Rosenbaum & Glover love! [Dec. 14th, 2008|04:00 pm]

I love the relationship between these two, onscreen and off. While the "redemption/martyrdom" of Lionel was one of SV's worst plot-lines in my opinion, Michael and John were never less than awesome. And I love that they are off-screen pals as well. Sexy men!

What they've learned from each other

John: “Michael is a madman, which makes it terrific. He’s an incredibly talented actor and we have a lot of fun together. He sings a lot and his head is always full of amazing ideas. It’s everywhere all at once. He’s interested in everything and he has a lot of suggestions to make about his work and the scenes. But if the director disagrees and they don’t do it his way, Michael doesn’t get bent out of shape or take it personally. I’m learning a lot from him.”

Michael: "He's an unbelievable man, inside and out….he's a humanitarian, a philanthropist. He's taught me how to be patient…I'm a little impatient. He's been an unbelievable mentor. He's taught me how to touch other actors in a scene when they're not prepared for it. It's weird but it's cool. …he's a wonderful human being."

A little more on John's predilection for touching...

Michael:"..you know what's great about John? He deserves...I just saw him in a play, off-Broadway. He was amazing. The great thing about John is he taught me how to touch people, or be touched, and feel comfortable with it. What I'm trying to say is in a scene....I remember the first scene, John would just go...(Michael reaches over and strokes his friend Chris's head) and at first I was, like "what the hell are you doing, John?"(As JG) "I'm touching my son." Oh, okay that's kinda weird. (as JG) "Just live in the moment, Michael..." I'm trying, John! I'm trying. But by the end of the show, it's like (strokes Chris again) "Oh, Clark...."

On their first meeting

Michael: "You scared me when you first came on Smallville."
John: "Why?"
Michael: "You did! Remember I told you that?"
John: "No…"
Michael: "John comes up the first day on set and he's very, you know, you're very intense…and remember, later on you told me it was because you were nervous, or you were a little unsure."
John: "Yes! I was intimidated by you."
Michael. "Not by me!"
John: "Yes!"
Michael: "Not by me! I'm a...fun kid. Look at me! Anyway, he comes on set and I go "Hey, nice to meet you" and he's like (serious voice) "Nice to meet you," and I was like, oh great, he's going to be one of those serious guys, who's always serious…but he's the biggest joker. Bigger than me, he makes me laugh. He makes everybody laugh. He's a riot on set!"

John on "blind" Lionel: "As an actor, it was difficult for me not making eye contact with a fellow actor, especially Michael because the two of us convey so much just in the looks we give one another in our scenes together."

Michael: "I don't think I've ever seen the guy mad! I think one time we were fighting with swords and he got locked up on his finger and he shouted and swore, and, don't tell him this, but I was kinda happy. It made me laugh to see him so pissed, because I'd never seen that. He's awesome. He's very supportive all the time; he nails it week in, week out."

I've always liked how John and Michael play the relationship as claustrophobic, with Lionel frequently looming over Lex like a menacing shadow. Look how this scene is blocked: Lionel has this huge room to walk around, but still chooses to get right into Lex's space:

Shoulder brush...

Michael: : "I think Lex, ultimately he's never really heard his father say "I love you". He looks at the Kents, he looks at Clark and he sees that, how they embrace each other and they hug and touch and (to John) and you do but there's something weird about it…

John: "Yes, poor Lex. [laughs] I’m trying to help him as much as I can! The boy’s got a trust problem. He won’t believe that I love him as much as a father should love a son, and I’m only trying to help him."

"If he could accept certain things about himself, he might be a healthier boy. And that’s all his father is trying to help him do. "

Michael: "John would say, "Oh no, Lionel loves Lex. They love each other. It's a great relationship: he's just looking out for his son. Father knows best."

John: "I think Lionel wants Lex to be like Lionel, and not like himself. He can't accept Lex's flaws – he thinks they make him Lex – and that's what makes our scenes together so exciting.

"He can't, and likely never will, give Lex his love because he's not enough like Lionel"

Michael: "We never go over our stuff until we get on the set. Occasionally, I'll be in the makeup trailer when John comes in, all chipper, and says with a big smile, "Hello, son." I'm like, "Hello, Dad", we give each other a big hug, sit down, and laugh. If there's a big scene, we'll read it once or twice, just for the lines. We then like to do what we call "playing"--we go and we play. The directors, for the most part, sit back and let us do our thing unless they really have a certain direction. But by this point in time on Smallville, it's nice to see they really just trust that John and I will come in and do our work. Their job's a lot easier when we walk in and try to make our moves interesting, pick our moments and mix it up a bit. "

John: "Michael and I, last year when I had a scene where I was having a massage and Michael came in, we worked out a father/son thing where I stood up and was sort of putting my bathrobe on where he looked down and checked out his dad’s package. That didn’t make it to the final cut.

Michael: "It's always new and fresh with John. We give each other 110 percent every time we work together. I look up to him. As an actor, no matter how good or bad you are, you're always looking for answers. Everyone says, "Listening is the most important thing for an actor to learn." Well, if that was the answer and everybody always listened, everybody would be a great actor. But you forget little things, and you forget to listen sometimes. There were moments last year I'd say to John, "God, I can't figure this out. There's all this stuff..." During last season's finale (Tempest), I'm throwing stuff off the shelves while we're walking around the room, and John gave me the best note ever: "Just listen. Think about what we're talking about and just listen." I go, "Oh my God...listening! That's what I need to do!" It's also about trust. John's a veteran actor, and it's nice to have him there because it seems like he has a lot of the answers."

And in conclusion...

John: "We enjoy each other to no end. I've never seen a mind that can work quicker. He's all over the place, and yet when he works he becomes completely focused. It's like a grab bag of a mind, you never know what's going to come out of it. I respect his talent a lot, and unless he's full of bullshit, he respects mine, too. At least that's what he says!"

Michael: "We text each other, we email. We say "Love you, son!" "Love you, dad!"

Hee! It's funny that Lionel checking out Clark's package in "Transference" made it past the censors!

Michael said this quote onstage at Jules Verne and actually mimed texting, the big ham! *loves him*

John Glover is indeed amazing and the scenes between Lex and Lionel were always awesome even if the writers totally messed everything up

Now I miss Lex and Lionel :(

Awww!

They need to do some theatre together or something, just to revisit that connection they have with each other.

Great post. Thanks. I hadn't seen a bunch of these quotes.

I would love to see them onstage together, or in any project. Even a joint panel at a Con would be completely awesome.

GOD how I miss them on the show.
The Luthors brought a big dose of Sexy! Although I like Tess, the manor seems very lonely without Lex leaning over the balcony or Lionel slinking through the door...

fascinating, the way they talked about each other.
Talent apart, they seem to have quite a bit in common: both epic flirts, playful, a little eccentric (in a good way!) It was a casting stroke of genius to put them together.

If John's going to be on Heroes, Michael needs to hasten his sexy ass over there too! I don't care how bad the script is, I want a Luthor reunion.

I love these two. The first Smallville I ever saw was a Lex-Lionel scene. I was flicking channels and came across their scene towards the end of Phoenix - I was instantly intrigued! I had no idea who these people were or what was going on, but I really wanted to find out. And the rest is history!

I miss them so much!

I love your icon - part of the enjoyment of Lex/Lionel is the contrast in their faces: Lionel is all sleek lines and elegant wolfish cheekbones and Lex is pure vulnerability, the baby-soft curves of those cheeks...

Ooh, their hug at the end of "Phoenix" is brilliant....an uneasy contrast with the sunshiney Clex hug. The Luthors drew me in too - I saw a rerun of "Perry" and instantly fell for Lex, then a rerun of "Legacy" caused me to start buying the dvds and watch the entire show in order.

The fact that these roles were brought to life by John and Michael are the only reason they worked so well. Even if you didn't like Lionel, he was still a cool character. It's great to see that they got along so well on and off set too. :D

I love that they text and e-mail each other too. hehe

I agree: it was a casting stroke of luck - or genius. Michael would have blown a lesser actor off the screen and the same is true for John.

I love that they text and e-mail each other too.
Too cute!

I can never tell you enough how much I love these amazing pic and quote posts you do. This one is beyond wonderful! The caps are both beautiful and emotional, and there are no words to describe the quotes! *swoons* By the time I got to the end, I was in tears, realizing what Smallville has lost, and how fortunate we were to have these two incredibly gifted actors on our show.

A lot of these quotes were new to me, thanks so much for sharing them with us! And the one about Lex checking out Lionel's "package" is priceless! We all got that weird, intense vibe when we watched that scene (my God, Lionel was just unbelievable!), but how awesome would it have been if they had included that part? And just thinking of them working it all out, being so connected to these characters, and so creative, gives me a thrill. I love them both so much!

The thing is, Michael makes connections with people. He doesn't just meet them, work with them, or become friends with them. He connects, entwines, and commits. I think he loves the people he cares about with all his heart, and if you're lucky enough to be on the receiving end of that, it must be the most special feeling imaginable. And John has this understanding of the human condition, this perception, that is uncanny, plus he seems to have a heart that is completely open. Together they make magic.

I know it would take everyone out of the moment, but what I wouldn't give to see them together on Heroes! :) Thank you for this, it's another entry to revisit and treasure, again and again.

Hee! Snap! I'm just back from commenting on your lovely "family" picspam, which I somehow missed when it was first posted!

And the one about Lex checking out Lionel's "package" is priceless! We all got that weird, intense vibe when we watched that scene (my God, Lionel was just unbelievable!), but how awesome would it have been if they had included that part?
Michael & John seem to share a naughty sense of humour! And if the "package" moment got cut from "Extinction", at least Tom did manage to fit a similar moment into "Transference" and have Lionel check out Clark's goods. I bet JG enjoyed that!

I love♥love♥love how you describe Michael here - it really seems spot-on to me. In his most recent interview, John mentions that he and Michael "did a lot of stuff" while working on SV, ie hung out together, and that Michael came to see his play...so many "on set" friendships end when the show or movie ends, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Michael (or with John.)

I know it would take everyone out of the moment, but what I wouldn't give to see them together on Heroes!
Heh. Me, too. I'm only a moderate Heroes fan so I'd happily sacrifice the moment for a GloverBaum reunion!

What fantastic pix to go with the quotations. A masterpiece, I say. Go, you!

I have a special fondness for this scene from "Accelerate": Lionel arrives to find Lex studying a display of cakes for his upcoming wedding, and says he didn't realize gluttony was one of his vices. "Well, if there's anyone who's an authority on the Seven Deadly Sins, it's you, Dad," says Lex.

Photobucket

Despite accusations of "gluttony," who's the first one to go for a piece of cake?

Photobucket

Lionel, that's who.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Lex was determined not to invite his father to his wedding (those were the days!) but Lionel was still trying to weasel his way into Lex's life with the gift of a Caribbean honeymoon. *sigh* I miss when Lionel was Evil and obsessed with his son. The above is is one of my favorite shots.

Remember how Lex didn't like Lionel to touch him, back in the early days? I do believe that gave rise to the many Luthorcest fics prevalent around then.

That's such a lovely shot, Lionel looming over Lex's shoulder, Lex half-amused, half-apprehensive, both guys looking so handsome...

It's interesting that most of these touches were improvised by John...so we get a double layer of reaction: Lex wary of Lionel, and Michael watching to see what John will do next! And of course, Clexers owe John a huge debt: by teaching Michael to unexpectedly touch co-stars in scenes, he gave us lots of great Clex moments, arm squeezes etc!
