Smallville Gaydar, Part 2! [May. 18th, 2009|12:37 pm]

[Tags|]

Since I'm a completist, here are more occasions when other characters on Smallville noticed, and commented on, Clark and Lex's relationship!

Part one is here: http://tasabian.livejournal.com/66133.html#cutid1

And here is the conclusion!

Lucas
When Lex drives up with Lucas, Clark is instantly unsettled and jealous.

Lucas notices.

His first line to Clark: "So uh, you and Lex....seem close."

After Lex is evicted from the mansion, Lucas baits Clark with more innuendo: "How's he doing down on the farm, Clark?"

Clark: "He's doing fine."

There are hints to Lex too. After Lex points out that high school kids can track Lucas down, Lucas says: "Like your friend....Clark Kent."

Lex doesn't miss the implication & quickly lets Lucas know that messing with Clark is a bad idea.

Lana
A better sense of gaydar would have made Lana a lot more fun, but she does have one moment of clarity in "Oracle" when she asks Lex if they can please stop talking about Clark.

Lex is all "twist my arm!" but Lana really should have taken this as a warning sign.

Phelan
When confronted by crooked cop Phelan in "Rogue", Lex denies knowing Clark.

Phelan: "Hmmm….I'd have pegged you for buddies."

(This is a fair assessment given that in the surveillance photo, Clark looks seconds away from passionately kissing Lex's head: NomNomNom.)

Cassandra
She deserves an honour badge for being the first to show Clex gaydar! She wants to give Lex a reading. When he declines, she offers this incentive: "Maybe I'll see your friend, Clark."

Lex doesn't like being read so easily. But even at this early stage, his interest in Clark is transparent!

Dr. Gardner
When Lex turns up at Summerholt, Gardner isn't surprised.

"Mr. Luthor. Should have known when young Clark stopped by that you wouldn't be far behind."

You got that right, Doc!

Jeff
In "Shimmer", everyone is jealous over Lex! Amy is jealous of Victoria. Clark is jealous of Victoria and Amy. And Amy's brother Jeff, though he claims to be acting on his sister's behalf, is clearly fixated on Lex himself. Jeff complains that Lex always says Clark is "special": "Well, I'm special too!" (When, and to whom, is Lex proclaiming Clark's specialness? I like to think he walked around the mansion randomly praising Clark.)

Security Guard
In "Shattered", Clark comes to the mansion to retrieve evidence from Lex's safe. The guard catches him, showing absolutely no surprise that Clark is freely roaming the mansion halls at dawn. Obviously the staff are used to Clark coming and going at all hours.

Clark leaves, saying: "Tell Darius I was looking for him…" (Tom flashes his eyes a bit and uses his flirtiest voice.) The Guard's face, formerly expressionless, is suddenly taken over by this longing look, as if to say: when you and Lex break up, I'm right here, farmboy!

Helen
In "Visitor", Helen gets a shock. No gaydar is required in the Clark-room. This is not subtext; this is billboard sized text. Lex tries to introduce the room gently, explaining that he needs a room "where he can be alone and think his own thoughts...." These would be Clark-thoughts, yes?

Then Lex goes all literary on her and quotes Emerson: "Obsession is the wellspring of genius and madness." He adds, unnecessarily, "This is MY obsession."

Though there's still a wedding to come, this is the moment their relationship ends, Helen forever overshadowed by Clark.

Oliver
In "Bride", Oliver shows that he is extremely threatened by Clark's relationship with Lex. He can't understand why Clark doesn't want to go and kill Lex right now.
Clark: "I can't do this today!"
Oliver: "What are you talking about, you've given Lex like a hundred second chances!"

Clark points out he has a wedding to attend.
Oliver: "The wedding? Is that the real reason you don't want to go after Lex? Or is that just an excuse?"

The next scene, on Oliver's plane, is also suffused with Clex and Oliver's jealousy.

Clark lets Oliver vent but doesn't back down.

And he takes the tracking device to prevent Oliver from going after Lex on his own.

Justin Hartley uses various ways to show Oliver's Clex-jealousy:
*angst*

*teary eyes & lip biting*

*fist biting*

This all stems from Oliver's first recognition of the enduring power of Clex. In "Rage", he hurt Lex...

So Clark hurt him.

Oliver sees the Clex-love and from then on, is hell-bent on killing Lex. (Three attempts to date.) This is the dark side of gaydar!

(And it won't work anyway, Ollie. Clex is FOREVER!)

I'm picturing Lex wandering the mansion, composing sonnets to Clark aloud XDDDDDD

Fantastic overview! You've simultaneously reminded me why I'm not watching the show anymore, and why I did watch it...

AWESOME!

the clex photo is a big evidence of what they both want! Clark is flirting with him even if Lex doesn't look at him back!
Cassandra was awesome...Even a blind woman can see how badly they want each other!

Martha in the episode Nemesis was really worried when Clark said that Lex might have changed "You two went through a lot..but so much has happened...you have to let go"

Lex told Helen that Clark is his obsession!? I don't remember this scene! *go watch it*

He says he's obsessed with how he was saved on the bridge - but the giant pictures of Clark tell another story!

He is! He can't stop staring at Lex ♥

That's a good example - Martha understood Clark and Lex a lot better than Jonathan did!

Such perceptive analysis!! (I confess, I did get a little distracted from the point, what with the MR and JH and Martin Cummins.)

It was nice of the props people to give Lex such an elegant masturbatorium! I can imagine he spent a lot of fulfilling time in there.

In that photo Phalen had, it looks like Clark wants to nom on more than just Lex's head. He looks like he's going to jump and ravish poor Lex right there. ;)

lol Now that is an adorable image. :D

This is the dark side of gaydar!

Poor Ollie. Jealousy is so not a good look on him, though it certainly explains the choice of green for his costume. And Ollie may be pretty, but he doesn't exude the sexiness that Lex does. ;)

He so does! And it explains the instant hostility to Victoria, and why Clark mopily leaves the party right after she arrives. Victoria prevented him pouncing on Lex!

It's been interesting to see Oliver try and fill the Lex-void in Clark's life: buying him things etc. But he's no replacement for Lex. Clark is pretty monogamous when it comes to Lex!

YAY!!! More hot Clex and how everyone noticed it! And yes, I love how Jeff says that in Shimmer . . . he saw it so clearly!

I remember when people told me that Clark and Oliver were the new Clex in season eight, and I promptly stamped my foot and threw rocks at them told them that was impossible. NOTHING ELSE IS CLEX!

Thanks for the awesomeness!

Nope. And Lex would never have krypto-darted Clark and left him in the street as Oliver did in "Doomsday" - he'd have stayed and cuddled him!

Jeff complains that Lex always says Clark is "special"

I think poor Jeff took Lex's comments out of context. Here's what I believe what Lex really said.

"Okay, I know he's a farm boy. I know he's innocent. That's why I gave up on subtlety, got down on my hands and knees and presented my ass to him. But he still didn't get it, instead asking if I'd lost something. What is he - 'special'?"

HA! Oh, poor Lex! And he's giving Clark such a pretty view there. *ogles*

Prodigal is permanently on my Top Ten list, especially after "Gone" revealed there is no spare bedroom at the farmhouse. So Lex obviously must have bunked with Clark!

And could Ollie be any more obvious about his Clark love and his Clex jealousy?
He is extremely blatant!

Yay! Part 2!
Some of these references are great!

Lmao! This mental image in my mind is quite hilarious and also, a little bit camp for some reason. *g*

this is the moment their relationship ends, Helen forever overshadowed by Clark.
Word! Helen realized that she would never be as important to Lex as Clark was.

Great picspam!

Yay! There's more! Okay, my whole comment on your previous entry was about Ollie and his jealousy. I didn't know you had already addressed it here! Sorry. :)

I love Prodigal, not only for the episode itself, but for all the wonderful fic it inspired. I would love to have seen them film that one. All that jealous tension couldn't have been accidental. And weren't you the one who told me Tom blocked the basketball scene, the most emotionally charged scene in the episode? His first foray into directing was positively steeped in slashiness! :) And now Lucas and his eyebrows are back to usurp Smallville's place on Thursday nights with Dawson's Vamps. With Adam Knight, no less! I think I'll pass.

That cap of Lex from Hourglass is so pretty! Guh.

(When, and to whom, is Lex proclaiming Clark's specialness? I like to think he walked around the mansion randomly praising Clark.)

Of course he did! I can just see him, waxing poetic, and making every member of the staff either jealous or hopelessly devoted with his superlatives!

The Guard's face, formerly expressionless, is suddenly taken over by this longing look, as if to say: when you and Lex break up, I'm right here, farmboy!

Awww, look at his face! I know the feeling. I'd love a little of that farmboy myself!

Who among us doesn't wish they had a Clark-room or a Lex-room, too? Or even better, a Clex-room! And as for Ollie, please see my comment on your other entry. *facepalm* Thanks for another fabulous, highly entertaining entry! It's always a treat to revisit Clex with you!

Heh, I ran out of space in my last post - Oliver's epic jealousy realy deserves a post of its own! And I'm very glad you did post your comment because it got me thinking about how the "Lexification" ot Oliver this year mirrors the "Lanafication" of Chloe - neither character revamp was successful, but a vengeful Lex-obsessed Oliver does help keep the Clex-fires burning!

I love Prodigal, not only for the episode itself, but for all the wonderful fic it inspired. I would love to have seen them film that one. All that jealous tension couldn't have been accidental.
The boys were playing it up to the hilt! I would love to have been a fly on that set too. We know how naughty Michael & Tom can be and the scene with Clark watching Lex fling hay bales surely inspired some comments!

And weren't you the one who told me Tom blocked the basketball scene, the most emotionally charged scene in the episode? His first foray into directing was positively steeped in slashiness!
I believe I learned that tidbit from Val or eeyore1017...it shows how well Tom understands what fans would like! My favourite moment in that scene is Clark's non-reaction to hurting Lucas. He's all "yeah, so?" and poor Pete looks so alarmed!

And now Lucas and his eyebrows are back to usurp Smallville's place on Thursday nights with Dawson's Vamps. With Adam Knight, no less! I think I'll pass.
I'm quite fond of Paul Wesley but not of Somerhalder, who also seems like a prat in real life. So I'll pass too. (I'm guiltily hoping that in Canada we might still get SV on Thursdays.)

I can just see him, waxing poetic, and making every member of the staff either jealous or hopelessly devoted with his superlatives!
Heh, and since Jeff can turn invisible, he would have access to Lex mumbling Clark-praise in his sleep, singing Clark-songs in the shower, composing Clark-poems on his laptop....

Awww, look at his face! I know the feeling. I'd love a little of that farmboy myself!
Yet another of the bit-part actors who manages to steal a scene!

Who among us doesn't wish they had a Clark-room or a Lex-room, too? Or even better, a Clex-room!
It would be better than Disneyland!
