Smallville: Rabid Review [Oct. 11th, 2009|05:57 pm]

I call this one...

I'm a sucker for zombies and this episode had good zombies, of the fast-moving and bitey variety. ED & CF played zombies very well, with lots of "grrr" and menace. There was lots of Clark finally: 23 minutes! The episode had two great inadvertent laughs: Oliver delivering an annoying monologue to his own reflection and putting Lois straight to sleep and the revelation that Clark is a scrapbooker.

In "Rabid", the show also bid farewell to a minor ongoing character and the Luthors' longest surviving minion, Security Guard George, played by Mike Dopud.

George made his first appearance in S6's "Static", when the manor is under attack by an invisible dude.

He turns up again in Labryinth - as part of Clark's dream world! It's a very nice touch that Clark's subconscious would recast Lex's security guard as an orderly.

In "Noir", George took a field trip with Lionel to the Talon. Objective: threaten Lois! This is the first ep. where George is referred to by name.

There was no George in S7. Was Lex annoyed by his moonlighting with Lionel? Was there a behind-the-scenes minion coup that left Gina & Regan on top? (They should have given us THAT episode instead of Sleeper.) George makes triumphant return in S8, as part of the Tess regime. However, he shows a commendable Lex-loyalty, pointing out that Plastique is dangerous and Lex "would have had them terminate the problem on-site." Stand up for Lex, George! We miss him too. (Me, I'd have knocked Plastique off for the gum-chewing & whining alone.)

George is in "Power" but I avoid even screencaps from that ep...so here he is visiting Tess in the hospital in "Eternal."

In Injustice, George is rendered unconscious by Oliver. (Guess who I was rooting for in that fight?)

In "Doomsday", George gets his longest speech, explaining to Tess that the orb has been stolen.

George appeared briefly in Savior, once again impressing me with his survival skills. (Did he go hide in a broom closet when Zod took over the manor?) But alas, he seems to have met his death-by-zombie in "Rabid."

At least, George gets a good exit. See how he is placed in the foreground in this scene and Tess is blurry in the back? That's generous, giving Mike Dopud a nice acting moment to leave the show on.

There's another security guard lying dead in the hall. Another nice touch: George is genuinely upset. The actor gets tears in his eyes and it totally adds to the scene that he's grieving his buddy for a moment.

It's scenes like this that fill me with affection for the SV directors. (In this case, Mike Rohl.) He could cut away to Tess but he's going to give George a proper send-off, not make him just an incidental casualty. I'm sure the actor appreciated that.

I always love when the supporting cast are rewarded with a juicy final scene or episode: Colin (Ring the bell!) had a wonderful last ep. in "Bride"; Gina had a great episode and exit in "Descent". Regan got to die with a little snark in "Power". Wish they'd brought Dominic back for an equally fabulous departure - he could have been added to Lionel's huge death toll of S3!

My other favourite Rabid moments: here's Oliver in narcissistic-monologue mode.

That's a pretty scrapbook, Clark!

And bless his heart, he went all out with pretty borders and little stick-on letters that spell out "LOVE". I demand an entire episode devoted to Clark's scrapbooking hobby now! Let's see the Lex volume(s), please!

'caps by Smallville Dedication. Thanks jeannev for the screen time totals!

Happy Thanksgiving to the Canucks!

Oh I totally wanna see the Lex version of that scrapbook ... doesn't that point even more to the whole 'gay' thing? I mean, really ... The Lex scrapbook has got to be volumes upon volumes!

LOL at Clark's scrapbooking. So cute, but so girly. Really, did no one in the props department consider that straight men don't generally doll up their photo albums like this?

Oh, George :( I miss miss you. Luthor minions have such a short time to live. I still miss that cutie guy that Lex had in S6.

Zombies rule!

Heh, well this is the same props team that brought us Lex's Clark room, Alexander the Great's fabulous breast plate and a vast array of ice dildos. I think they knew EXACTLY what they were doing!

I still miss that cutie guy that Lex had in S6.
He was a sweetie. George is a shining star of longevity compared to most of his colleagues.

George's death made me wonder how many eps he'd been in....it was more than I remembered!

But I was TOTALLY shocked that Justin(Oliver) appeared shirtless (read my sarcasm!
Oliver finds the world of shirts a frightening and confusing place!

I too want to see Clark's scapebook(s) of Lex!! I image lots of purple everything!
Definitely purple! Maybe Clark drew a few little pictures as well.

My justification of the girliness of Clark's scrapbook is that it was given to him by Lana. Maybe I'm just being too sensible though? :-)

RIP George...:-(

There is no justification required for Clark's scrapbook - it is entirely awesome! (Although the idea that Lana would present Clark with an album filled with photos of herself is quite awesome too.)

That's a wonderful explanation! I totally buy it.

That scene with Ollie staring at himself just had me rolling with laughter - the very definition of narcissism. What an asshat.

Wouldn't it be great to see the Lex pages of Clark's scrapbooks? Lots of purple for sure!

I would have rolled with laughter too if I hadn't been screaming at the screen "stfu!"
Oh, and I was cheering at zombie!Lois and asking her to get rid of him for good.

Poor Justin Hartley! There is just no making that dialogue work, and the staging just makes it more comical!

Oh, yeah!

I'm amazed at your knowledge of Luthors' minions! I had no idea George had been in so many episodes (or that his name was George, for that matter) I too am glad he got a proper send-off though.

As for Oliver, words fail to describe how much I loathe the character.

Everything about the character is baffling this year - why is Oliver in deeper mourning for Jimmy than anyone else? He met him once! If they wanted to make Oliver sympathetic, he could have been all over Clark with drunken apologies...but,no. Once again he's pompous & completely lacking awareness of his own actions.

Poor Justin - no wonder he seemed a little down at ComicCon, with such an awful plotline!

I remembered him from S8 and "Noir" but hadn't realized George dated back so far! The actor is one of those Vancouverites who appears on every single genre show - quite a nice career.

Another Luthor minion no more. :-(

I do love how you've capped/described his final scene though.

I wonder if we'll be seeing more of the eyelinered!shouldbeinschool!dude that was working for Tess in the last ep?

My guess is he'll be around long enough to be killed by Zod!

Another Luthor minion no more.
I still miss Gina the most!

Aww, I didn't realise George had been in so many eps! Well, wherever he's gone it must be to a better place than Smallville.

Clearly no straight guy keeps a scrapbook like that (well, not one that isn't later served with a restraining order anyway), so the only explanation is that while snooping round Clark's bedroom Lana found the fabulous purple Lex scrap book(s) that he keeps under his bed (with the porn) and, seething with jealously, made a scrapbook for him filled with pictures of herself to remind him that she's the one he should be worshipping.

I haven't seen the ep yet but I look forward to Oliver's monologue, it sounds glorious.

This has to be the explanation! However silly the plots get, the props people always come through for us. That scrapbook made me so happy.

It is a high-quality whine indeed!

I bet he has a whole shelf dedicated to Lex: Vol 1-7 filled with first kiss, first sexual position, first fight, etc. The pages would have pictures with comments under them.
I would love to read that book!!!
